VMware PKS (VMware Pivotal Container Service) is a managed container service that allows users to simplify, operate and manage Kubernetes clusters in multi-cloud environments. The software, provided by VMware and Pivotal Software, attempts to simplify the deployment of Kubernetes clusters so they can be better provisioned, operated and managed by developers and operators within an organization. PKS will further aid organizations and developers through the implementation of automation tools.
After an operator installs PKS, developers can begin to provision Kubernetes clusters using a command line interface (CLI). From the CLI, users can run containers on Kubernetes. PKS also supports health monitoring and security tools as well as provides high availability (HA).
VMware PKS works by using BOSH, a tool chain for the deployment and life-cycle management of large distributed services. This allows users to start, deploy, and manage Kubernetes clusters in an environment with high availability. PKS also uses a set of APIs in the command line interface that allows operators to fully automate the deployment of Kubernetes clusters. The automation APIs enable users to automate the configuration, provision and security features, as well as load balancers and networks. The service also uses the latest open sourced distribution of Kubernetes.
VMware PKS is available as part of Pivotal Cloud Foundry, or on its own as a subscription-based license.
